Geography and Land marks

Pennsylvania Geography

Almost totally covered by mountains, most of the state is a series of rolling hills, plateaus and ridges, punctuated by valleys.

Over 50% of the land is still covered by forest land and the only lowlands are in the southeast.

The Appalachian mountains  slice through the center of Pennsylvania, with the Allegheny and Pocano Mountains, the state’s most significant subranges. The highest point in the state is Mt. Davis, at 3,213 ft.

Pine Creek Gorge – often called the “Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania” – is 50 miles in length, and over 1,000 ft deep in places.

Blue Mountain is a 150 mile long ridge that forms part of the the eastern edge of the Appalachian mountain range.

and the winner of the biggest  city in Pennsylvania is

Philadelphia:With a population of 1.5 million.

you will be traveling to the western hemisphere and the eastern coast line of the united states.

Animals That you will find while you are staying in this forest

While in the forests of Pennsyvania you will find Members of the Canidae family such as the Foxes and Coyotes. There are many avian species there such as Pileated Wood peckers, Snowy owls up north, and Cardinals.  If your lucky you might spot a black bear from a distance don’t get too close or you could get injured. In order to survive here these animals either have thick coats, migrate to warmer climate like the monarch butterfly, or hibernate. so if you plan on staying here for a ski trip or a winter vacation be sure to pack warm

Climate

The climate in Pennsylvania is cold in the winter and warm in the summer

The average winter weather is anything ranging below 40 degrees

The summer weather is a long lasting thing, bringing humid heat to the southeast. The temp can be 70 and higher in most places.

The fall weather is rather cooler in the morning and slowly gets warmer throughout the day. The typical weather is 40 through 70. The coldest month is January and the warmest month is June.

I recommend wearing a coat and heavy clothes in the winter and shorts and a tee shirt in the spring and summer

What plants you will find in this type of forest

There are three different levels of plants in the temperate deciduous forest.

First Level

The first level in the forest floor. You are most likely to find lichens, ferns, wildflowers, and other small plants.

Second Level

The second level is filled with shrubs

Third Level

The third level is mainly trees. There are hardwood trees, which are the maple, oak, birch, magnolia, sweet gum, and beech trees. You might be able to find spruce, fir, and pine trees that would be mixed in with the hardwood.

No plants really pose a threat to you in this forest
